Importance of Mulch

In simple terms, mulch is a layer farmers apply on the surface of their farm to boost their farming activities. The following are some benefits of mulch.

Benefit of mulch is that it helps in soil water conservation to help the plants grow normally. Once mulch has been applied in the garden, it regulate the soil temperature and reduces the rate of soil water evaporation. Organic mulch is very important to agriculture sector because, despite the climate, a farmer is able to carry on his/her farming activities. Temperature of the soil moist is reduced to the point of converting to water before it escapes into the atmosphere.

The top fertile soil is usually protected from all forms of soil erosion through rainwater or wind. The top fertile soil is usually loose and vulnerable to all types of soil erosion. Soil erosion causes the farm to become barren because of the lack of fertile topsoil. It is not possible for any farming in a barren farm because it lacks the necessary ingredients to sustain plants. Strong winds are also effective soil erosion agent. It is more difficult to dig a land that has been eroded and hard pan left behind.

The third benefit of using mulch in your farm is that the fertility of the soil is increased. When organic mulch decompose in the soil, the fertility is boosted. This helps to reduce the amount of inorganic chemical fertilizer used on a farm which is quite expensive while mulch is very cheap. The acidity of the soil can naturally be regulated by the use of mulch which decomposes and alters the soil PH depending on the composition of the plant used as mulch.

The fourth advantage of using mulch is that is used to naturally control the weeds in the farm. The germination of weed seeds is prevented by mulch. Germination of a seed is facilitated by air, water, warmth, and minerals. The supply of air is reduced by a great percentage leading to failure of weed seed to germinate and instead decompose and become manure which boosts the soil fertility.

Fifthly, mulch is very cheap and affordable to almost all farmers. Mulch does not require specialized skills to prepare. Mulch that is sold by various industries are cheap.

Sixth, you can use mulch a way of decorating your farm or land. Decoration by mulch is usually done using river stone. River stones have varied properties that make them favorite for mulch decoration.

Lastly, mulch is environmentally friendly because they decompose very fast as oppose to other methods of farming like the use of fertilizes. Decomposed mulch turns into manure that helps the soil retain the soil water and allow easy penetration of plant roots.
