There is a big possibility of having serious health problems when you are exposed to asbestos, and this finding is not to be taken lightly. This is a common problem, considering the fact that statistics showed 39,000 lives are claimed every year in the United States alone due to this exposure to asbestos.
So, when you are exposed to asbestos, it is better to know what could be risky to your health so you would know what action to take.
The first health risk is mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer. This happens in the membrane covering the chest cavity and your lungs, that can also spread to the membrane of your abdominal cavity and in the linings of other internal organs.
The second health risk which is the most common result due to asbestos exposure is the lung cancer. When you are exposed to any construction work, or you are exposed to deteriorating asbestos products, your risk of lung cancer becomes greater.
Know that dangerous fibers are coming in when you breathe asbestos, and these fibers would cause scarring on your lungs leading to the next health risk called asbestosis. As the lungs are scarred, it will be harder for oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through the lungs thus harder for the person to breathe. People who are working much of their lives in demolition or construction environment have this disease as more common in them to have.
Another health risk in asbestos exposure is the pleural disease although not cancerous but can change the membrane surrounding your chest cavity and lungs. There is a thickening of membrane and fluid buildup if you have this disease, which in serious cases will lead to a lower lung capacity and will not allow you to perform physical activities.
There are immune changes that are health risks when exposed to asbestos of which the types but are not known clearly for now. Exposure to asbestos have shown in studies to have a link in a lower immune function. These signs of lower immune function is clearly observed especially if the person does not project any other disease.
A person is advised then not to take it for granted when being exposed to asbestos as these mentioned health risks could happen. Be aware that it takes years of exposure to asbestos before you see these signs of the diseases, and thus it is not just enough to know these health risks. A person is advised, that if it is possible to remove any exposure to asbestos to do it so that the chances of getting sick in the future is being reduced, and if feeling to have the disease to contact someone who can fix the problem.
